Rice growing industry in the country is at threat. The stake holders that include farmers, millers and traders say that if government does not immediately intervene, the price of rice will go high since the local farmers have started abandoning rice farming and opting for other crops.
Isaac Kashaija, the chairperson of the rice farmers, traders and millers association says that 57 rice milling industries have so far closed.
He further says that the discouragement of local farmers will not only affect them but this will in the near future hike the price of rice, more industries will close which will cause un employment to many Ugandans and government will also lose revenue.
The manager Werike investment the rice milling industry in Jinja, Joshua Hegaya says that the industry is under producing and yet they have to pay all costs of production that includes taxes, power among many others adding that is posing a big challenge to them.
