NEBBI. The Ministry of Education under the designed project of Teachers Effectiveness and Learners Achievements (TELA) has equipped head teachers with smart phones to monitor the performance and absenteeism of teachers in schools.

TELA monitoring system is a platform which enables information exchange between various stakeholders’ involved in the management of primary schools and secondary schools.

The system which is operated on the mobile devices with android operating system will ensure teachers are monitored right from their arrival at their respective schools.

James Gwoktho the Nebbi district inspector of schools says, the system will reduce teacher absenteeism and hence improve on the performance of learners.

He said the absenteeism of teachers in the district stands at 10 percent and he was optimistic that the intervention would reduce the absenteeism and also increase the work rate of classroom teachers with targeted performance of pupils.

Alex Ongieragiu of Kele Primary school in Erussi Sub County, Nebbi district one of the head teachers welcomed the initiative but notes that most schools are not connected with electricity yet teacher’s performance is monitored on electronic devices (Smart phones).

“I want to urge the ministry of education to provide schools with solar chargers for the project to be successful,” he said.

The chairman LC 3 Erussi Sub county Collins Oromchan Jalacida applauded government for the good programs in the education sector.

“There are so many good government programs but because they lack electricity power they tend to flop,” he noted.

He urged the government to provide rural schools with solar lighting systems if such a program is to succeed.
