ZOMBO: In a bid to instill a reading culture and to bring access to internet services nearer to the youth in Zombo district, Zombo community learning center has received a fully equipped computer installed with internet services from Action aid.
The Youth center in Zombo district is one of the facilities employed by the council as an educational arm that is aimed at offering free learning, attainment of knowledge and cultural enlightenment to support literacy, formal and self- guided education and business development to the youth.
According to leaders in the district, the learning center also serves as a one stop center through which the communities get access to a book hub where there are relevant reading materials and internet services for all the needed research work.
The Deputy RDC Zombo Grace Atim says, since there is poor performance in the district, the community library, if well used and maintained, it will aid learning of learners and amplify teachers’ research on the new curriculum.
She said most of the teachers in the district are computer illiterate and unable to research new interventions through the internet to aid the learning for better results.
“The world is going digital and Ugandans must embrace digitalization to market their own products. I therefore urge teachers to always be updated through the internet to passover the knowledge to the learners”, Atim said.
Meanwhile the District Community Development Officer Zombo district Samuel Ocaki has criticized public servants for being reluctant to use public libraries to access government documents.
He adds that due to inaccessibility of public documents by the public officers on internet and books, the local communities aren’t informed about government programs.
However, the head teacher of Oturugang Primary school in Zombo district Rev. Sis Flavia Manano says the community learning center should be transformed into a rehabilitation center for dropout learners since the district is battling with high dropout rate of the learners.
She adds that it’s the right time teachers used the available facility in updating their learning skills in E’ learning programs such that the learners are not left behind.
The learning center is fully supported and refurbished by Actionaid to ensure that the learning computer hub provides access for both business studies and agricultural search to boost all departments.
Robert Asiime the assistant program officer Actionaid Northern Uganda says since social media has taken most of the time for the youth, their capacity to embrace digitalization as a tool for creating both market opportunities and studies, should be enhanced.
