KAMPALA: With just a few days to Martyrs day celebrations at Namugongo shrines, pilgrims have been urged to remain vigilant and extra alert while at any of the respective venues, saying attacks can happen anytime and anyplace without warning.

According to the police spokesman Fred Enanga, security personnel are fully prepared to handle any aggression during and after the Martyrs day celebrations.

“Security precautions have been put in place and items like ammunitions, animals other than police K9, back packs exceeding size restrictions, metallic containers, bicycles and pepper spray among others are prohibited at the venue,” Enanga said.

Enanga further urges pilgrims to avoid risks like subjecting themselves to hunger, thirst, standing for long hours, congestion and perseverance among others.

He also advises the pilgrims to seek for medical attention in case of body weakness to avoid food poisoning among others.

Millions of pilgrims, well-wishers and faith-based tourists are expected to gather at the Catholic Shrine in Namugongo, the Anglican Shrine at Nakiyanja, Mamre Prayer Centre and the Muslim Shrine at Namugongo.

Meanwhile Foot pilgrims from Nebbi diocese have decried the moral decadence especially amongst the youth.

The pilgrims that started their journey on May 15TH and arrived at Namugongo catholic martyrs shrine on May 28th, reveal that they are perturbed by the manner in which Ugandans and especially the youth are copying foreign behaviors which have became a moral threat among the local communities.

Martin Afoyoru Okello the secretary of the pilgrims in an interview with our reporter said that this is an indication that people have been swayed away from God’s principles.

He said that this can only be solved by parents instilling fear of God and encouraging their children to regularly attend church services so that they can learn from the preachings.

Afoyoru also castigated those involved in acts of homosexuality calling on government to ensure criminal of this act are jailed but not killed since the act of killing is ungodly.

Most of the pilgrims told Paidha FM that their motivation to walk to Namugongo is to effectively pray for their families, children education, healing, and to be delivered from various bondages among other needs.
