GULU: The Aswa Region Police Command Zone has been split into two to ensure effective policing. The new command zones now include the East and West Acholi.

East Acholi comprises Kitgum, Lamwo, Pader, and Agago districts while the West includes Gulu City, Gulu district, Amuru, Omoro, and Nwoya.

Previously, the Aswa Region Police Command Zone comprised eight districts and one city.

In 2019, the then Inspector General of Police, General Kale Kayihura announced that the Aswa River Region would be split into two separate regions for easy enforcement against crimes and administrative management of police affairs.

David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson said today that the separation seeks to ensure effective policing and bring services closer to the people noting that the region was previously too vast.

He added that the new units started operation on Monday adding that commanders of the two areas have already been posted.

Early this year, President Museveni said that the security would take some measures to enhance security in the Acholi policing area which he noted had been greatly affected by armed violence including cattle rustling, attacks by South Sudanese and Karamojong warriors.
