NEBBI. Nebbi resident district commissioner Robert Abak has warned communities in Nebbi district against theft and vandalism of government projects.

He made the remarks on Monday during the handing over of a piped water project to a contractor at Kucwiny trading centre, Kucwiny sub-county, Nebbi district.

His remarks come barely two days after his office received allegations of theft of building materials at Kucwiny health centre III by some local communities surrounding the facility. He said most time the people who vandalize government projects are within the communities.

You report the thieves. These thieves are not coming from far, these are our people and you know them,” said Abak.

In the meantime, Emmanuel Orombi, Nebbi district chairperson, has tasked the contractor to act professionally while executing their duties and employ the locals and avoid doing shoddy work.

“Don’t bring people from far expect the technical people. Manual laborers must be from the communities, let them be the ones to dig,” he remarked.

Mean while Orombi  noted that, some contractors bring their own workers who divert from their work by engaging unscrupulous behaviors like luring women into sexual relationships, and hence causing tension in the communities.

Joseph Okidi who represented the contractor during the handover of the site to the contractor appealed to local council one chairperson’s to help identify youths who are well behaved to work at the project.

Meanwhile, some residents, especially women who used to trek for long distances in search of water, applauded the district leadership for taking clean water to them.

We are happy that this project has been brought near to us, we pray that its completed in time to  help us handle the water challenge we are currently experiencing,” said one woman. The new water connections will serve more than 3,000 households who did not have clean water for decades and it will be built within the duration of three months.
