E. Marriet Consultants has recommended the development of a modern tourist stopover at Kafu Junction in Kimengo Sub-county, Masindi District, as a strategy to enhance local revenue generation and stimulate economic activity.
The consultancy firm was contracted by the National Planning Authority (NPA) to conduct a feasibility study, following a request by Masindi District to the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Tourism and Antiquities for support.
Findings from the study were presented to key stakeholders at the district council chambers. The report revealed that despite Kafu Junction’s strategic position as a gateway to major tourist destinations, it currently generates minimal revenue.
According to Edgar Tusingwire Bagarukayo, a mechanical engineer with E. Marriet Consultants, only 14 out of every 100 vehicles passing through the junction make a stop. He attributed the low stopover rate to the absence of standard tourist facilities, poor sanitation, and limited accommodation options. As a result, most travelers only make brief stops to purchase roasted cassava and meat.
To address these challenges, the firm has proposed the establishment of a modern tourist hub equipped with essential amenities, including washrooms, a restaurant, a taxi stage, a fuel station, a motel, a market, and designated stalls.
The project aims to increase the number of travelers who stop at the junction, extend their stay, and boost local spending.
Bagarukayo emphasized that the proposed development is intended to support, rather than displace, existing traders by improving their working conditions and income potential.
Masindi District Chairperson Cosmas Byaruhanga welcomed the proposal, describing it as a long-awaited opportunity to transform Kafu Junction into a modern and economically viable stopover.
Meanwhile, the District Tourism Officer, Rita Karungi, noted that the report will be submitted to the Ministry for approval. She added that, upon approval, the district will identify a contractor under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement to implement the project.
