President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed  Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo as the Acting Minister of Education and Sports, following the inability of First Lady  Janet Kataaha Museveni to assume the position due to health-related challenges.

According to a statement from State House the appointment, which takes immediate effect, was made under Article 99(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, which vests executive authority in the President.

Janet Museveni was  reappointed Minister of Education and Sports in the current Cabinet. However, she was unable to appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting and subsequently missed the swearing-in ceremony for the new Cabinet due to illness.

President Museveni recently revealed that the First Lady was battling a serious health condition that kept her away from public duties for several months, although he noted that her condition had improved significantly.

In light of the circumstances, President Museveni appointed Muyingo to provide leadership and ensure continuity in the management of the Ministry of Education and Sports pending further guidance on the substantive ministerial position.

Muyingo currently serves as State Minister for Higher Education and is one of the country’s most experienced education leaders. Before joining national politics, he built a distinguished career as an educator and school administrator and has been instrumental in advancing higher education policies and programmes in Uganda.

As Acting Minister,  Muyingo will oversee the implementation of government policies and programmes in the education and sports sectors. His responsibilities will include supervising education reforms, coordinating ministry operations, supporting teacher development, enhancing access to quality education, and promoting sports development across the country.

The Ministry of Education and Sports remains at the center of Uganda’s human capital development agenda, with ongoing efforts focused on improving learning outcomes, strengthening technical and vocational education, advancing digital learning initiatives, and expanding sports infrastructure.

The appointment of  Muyingo is expected to ensure stability and uninterrupted service delivery within the ministry as the government continues to implement its education and sports priorities.

The President’s directive takes immediate effect.
