KAMPALA: The territorial police in Kampala Metropolitan, says investigations into the tragic murder by shooting of the Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Rtd. Col. Charles Okello Engola have kicked off.

Engola was gunned down, by his home bodyguard, identified as Pte. Wilson Sabiiti, at his home in Kyanja a Kampala suburb at around 9am today morning.

According to a statement from the police spokesperson Fred Enanga the Minister’s body guard is said to have fired multiple shots at close range killing him instantly as he was entering in his official vehicle to go for work.

Enanga says that the suspect also shot and wounded the ADC, Lt. Ronald Otim, before fleeing to Kyanja trading center on foot, where he entered into a salon and shot himself dead.

Enanga says that the motive of the murder has not yet been established.

Minister Engola was last seen during Labour Day celebrations that took place in Namutumba district on Monday 1ST MAY.

While in the military, Engola was the commander of the UPDF 501 Brigade, at Opit, in Gulu District.

He was then promoted to the rank of colonel and retired from the military in 2007.

During his political career, he served as Oyam District LCV Chairperson on the ruling NRM party ticket for two terms.

In 2016, he was elected Oyam North Member of Parliament and re-elected in 2021.

He also served as State Minister of Defence from 2016 until 2021.
