The swearing-in of Members of Parliament-elect for Uganda’s 12th Parliament officially began today at the Parliament Building, Kampala, marking the start of a new legislative term following the 2026 general elections.
The exercise is scheduled to run for three days, from May 13 to May 15, under the supervision of the Clerk to Parliament. All elected legislators are required to take both the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Member of Parliament before formally assuming their seats in the House.
Security was tightened around Parliament as MPs arrived in scheduled groups for the structured ceremony, which is expected to see over 500 legislators sworn in to constitute the new Parliament.
Opening Day Swearing-In: Senior Leaders and First-Time MPs
Prominent political figures from both the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and opposition parties were among those sworn in on the opening day. Among them were parliament speaker, Anita Annet Among, who was sworn in ahead of the election of new parliamentary leadership, and Robina Nabbanja, who continues to serve as both head of government business and Member of Parliament.
Several first-time MPs from across political parties, including the NRM, National Unity Platform (NUP), Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), and independent candidates, also took their oaths during the opening sessions, marking their formal entry into the legislative chamber.

The ruling NRM will retain a parliamentary majority, while the National Unity Platform (NUP) remains the leading opposition party with strong support in urban constituencies

Regional Representation: West Nile Sub-Region
The West Nile sub-region, which includes districts such as Zombo, Arua, Yumbe, Koboko, Moyo, Anjuman, Nebbi, and Pakwach, has maintained significant representation in the new Parliament, with both returning and newly elected legislators taking part in the swearing-in process.
From this region, Isaac Otimgiw will be sworn in as MP-elect for Padyere County, while Gabriel Okumu represents Okoro County. Teopista Acamfua will take oath as Zombo District Woman MP, while Grace Freedom Kwiyucwiny represents Ora County. Avur Jane Pacuto to swear in as Woman MP for Pakwach District, and Marshall Alenyo Godfrey represents Jonam County.
In Yumbe district, Ezama Siraji Brahan Abason will be sworn in to represent Aringa Constituency, alongside Alione Yorke Odria for Aringa South County. Karim Musa, an independent candidate, represents Aringa North County, while Avako Melsa Naima Gule serves as Yumbe District Woman MP.
In Anjuman District, veteran politician Moses Ali will be sworn in as MP for Adjuman West County, continuing his long-standing presence in the national legislature.
Next Steps in Parliament Business
The swearing-in exercise will continue until May 15, after which Members of Parliament will proceed to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament. Once fully constituted, the new Parliament is expected to focus on national priorities including infrastructure development, improved service delivery, facilitation of cross-border trade, and strengthening public accountability systems.
