Outgoing Speaker , Anita Among has officially withdrawn from the race for Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament following growing political pressure and ongoing corruption-related investigations.

In a statement released Sunday night, Among said the decision came after “wide consultations and deep introspection,” adding that she wanted to preserve harmony within the ruling NRM party. She also pledged cooperation with ongoing investigations by state agencies.

According to reports, a recent State House meeting chaired by President Yoweri Museveni reportedly advised Anita Among to withdraw from the speaker ship race due to controversy surrounding her wealth and public scrutiny over corruption allegations.

Uganda’s Inspectorate of Government (IGG) has confirmed it is processing a formal complaint related to Anita Among’s wealth and conduct while in office. Officials said legal and administrative procedures are underway before full investigations begin.

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political group associated with Chief of Defense Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba,  withdrew its endorsement of Anita Among for Speaker. The group instead advised MPs to support Minister of Defence Jacob Oboth-Oboth, a candidate endorsed by President Museveni and chairperson of the ruling NRM party.

Public debate around Anita Among continues to intensify on social media and in political circles following reports of investigations into her wealth, luxury properties, and alleged misuse of office. Several Ugandans online have called for transparency and accountability from top parliamentary leaders.
