Rehabilitation works on Anjat Stream

Residents of Akir Cell in Paidha Town Council, Zombo District, are set to benefit from improved access to clean and safe water following the completion of rehabilitation works on Anjat Stream, one of the area’s oldest water sources.

Akir Cell is home to more than 800 households, many of whom have long faced challenges accessing reliable domestic water. Residents say the growing population has increased demand, while the limited number of water sources has often forced them to spend long hours queuing for water, affecting their daily activities.

Resident Harriet Wiajik says the rehabilitation of Anjat Stream will help ease the pressure on the two major water sources previously serving the community. Another resident, Oliver Kayenyparwoth, says the situation was particularly difficult during the rainy season, when heavy rains caused erosion along the stream banks and affected water quality.

Contractor Chonga Francis explains the works on the project

Contractor Chonga Francis says the week-long rehabilitation works have been completed using mainly locally available construction materials. He says the restored stream has a steady flow, with a 20-litre jerrycan filling in about two minutes. Chonga has urged residents to form a management committee to monitor and protect the water source.

Akir Cell LCI Chairperson Wilfred Cwinyaai Ondusa has also called on residents to protect the stream and avoid activities that could damage its natural banks and surrounding infrastructure. The project was initiated by Zombo Woman Member of Parliament Topista Acamfua as part of efforts to address water shortages and health risks associated with ageing water infrastructure. The rehabilitation is expected to ease pressure on existing water sources and improve access to safe water for residents.
