The vibrant rhythms of Agwara dance took centre stage on Sunday, August 30, 2026, as the 11th edition of the Alur Cultural Festival got underway at Lady M Gardens in Jupandika East Cell, Nyibola Ward.

The festival opened to the public in the mid-morning, attracting growing numbers of revellers eager to celebrate Alur culture after the highly anticipated event was postponed in July 2026 following the outbreak of Ebola in Bundibugyo District.

The atmosphere came alive with the arrival of energetic Agwara dancers, whose performances provided a colourful opening to the cultural celebrations. The dancers, comprising mainly young men alongside some older performers, appeared bare-chested and adorned with beaded necklaces, animal skins and traditional headgear decorated with feathers. Their costumes were complemented by bold black shakers fastened around their calves, adding rhythm and movement to their performances.

As the dancers moved through the venue, crowds continued to build, with revellers converging at Lady M Gardens to witness performances and celebrate the heritage, traditions and identity of the Alur people.

During the event, Alur Kingdom Executive Director Vincent Ochaya Orach presented a portrait of Ubimu Phillip Olarker Rauni III to MTN Uganda, the official partner of the festival, in recognition of the telecommunications company’s support towards the annual cultural celebrations.

Meanwhile, Alur Cultural Festival Chief Executive Officer Rwothomio Omwon Denis Francis Ringulangu II, of Awoora Chiefdom, announced that the next edition of the festival will be hosted in Nebbi District, although the specific venue will be communicated at a later date.
