Residents of Arua City have been urged to take precautionary measures as signs of the anticipated El Niño rainy season begin to emerge, raising concerns about possible health risks and other dangers associated with heavy rainfall.

El Niño is a climate phenomenon that can influence weather patterns in different parts of the world, sometimes resulting in above-normal rainfall, heavy storms and flooding. The conditions can also increase the risk of cold-related illnesses, waterborne diseases and other health challenges, particularly among vulnerable groups.

Swadik Abiriga, LC1 Chairperson of Ezova Cell in Driwala Ward, Ayivu Division, has called on local leaders to sensitise residents about the expected rains and encourage households to take early preventive measures.

Maliki Butele Andu, a third-year medical student at Makerere University, says vulnerable people, including children, older persons and those with underlying health conditions, could face increased risks during the rainy season and should be given special attention.

Weather experts indicate that El Niño-related rainfall in the West Nile region is expected to intensify between late October and mid-November 2026. The above-normal rainfall could continue through December and extend into January 2027, raising the need for residents to remain alert and prepare for possible weather-related emergencies.
