BULIISA — A severe water crisis has struck Buliisa Town Council following the collapse of a 100,000-litre tap water harvesting tank that had been serving the area.

The tank, constructed in 2015 under the Central Water Umbrella, had been a key source of water for the town council and parts of Kigwera Sub-county. Its destruction has left residents, schools, health facilities, prisons and hotels struggling to access clean and safe water.

Muliisa Epafura, the LC3 Chairperson of Buliisa Town Council, described the situation as critical, particularly for essential institutions such as schools and health centres. He said that although authorities have introduced temporary daytime water pumping, the measure remains inadequate to meet the growing demand.

“The most affected are institutions like Buliisa Health Centre IV and schools,” Epafura noted, adding that management of the Central Water Umbrella has committed to continue daytime pumping to ease the shortage.

At Buliisa Health Centre IV, the facility’s in-charge, Dr. Peter Otim, said the crisis has forced both the public and institutions to depend on a single borehole within the health centre.

He warned that the borehole is under immense pressure and could break down if the situation persists, further worsening access to water in the area.

Local leaders are now calling for urgent intervention to restore a reliable water supply and prevent a deepening humanitarian challenge.
