A somber mood engulfed Parliament on the morning of Wednesday, 22 April 2026, as legislators and staff received the remains of the late Kalangala District Woman MP, Helen Nakimuli.
Nakimuli passed away on 19 April 2026 at a private hospital in Kampala.
Her remains were received at 10:00 a.m. at Parliament’s South Wing parking by parliament speaker,Anita Among, her deputy Thomas Tayebwa, Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua, Third Deputy Prime Minister Rukia Nakadama, and several Members of Parliament.
Earlier, mourners were visibly moved by the arrival of Nakimuli’s father, Reverend Father Christopher Walusimbi of the Orthodox Church, alongside close family members.
A passionate sportswoman, Nakimuli captained the Parliament Women’s Volleyball Team and also played netball and basketball. In tribute, members of the sports fraternity escorted her hearse from Parliament’s main gate, forming a guard of honour.
Mourners, most dressed in black, gathered in large numbers at the Parliament foyer where her body lay in state. Many were overcome with emotion as they paid their respects.
Speaker Among and Deputy Speaker Tayebwa later consoled the bereaved family and signed the condolence book.
Nakimuli last appeared in Parliament on 15 April 2026, where she pressed the State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, to clarify Uganda’s preparedness to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, particularly regarding timelines for infrastructure readiness, including Hoima Stadium.
