The Government of Uganda, with support from the World Bank, has completed the construction of two seed secondary schools worth Shs4.8 billion in Zombo District under the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers (UgIFT) Education Programme.
The projects, located in Kango Sub- County and Paidha Sub- County, were undertaken to expand access to affordable secondary education in rural communities and reduce the distance learners travel to access education services.
District leaders and community members officially received the fully furnished school facilities from the contractor, Newton Technical Services. The newly completed infrastructure includes classroom blocks, science laboratories, computer laboratories, sanitary facilities, teachers’ houses, and water and electricity installations.
Speaking during the handover, Zombo District Senior Civil Engineer Isaac Ngageno said the district would continue monitoring the projects during the defects liability period, which runs until December 2026. “The district will closely monitor the projects throughout the defects liability period to ensure any defects identified are rectified by the contractor before the expiry of the contract obligations,” Ngageno said.
The Director of Newton Technical Services, Muragesh Hiremath, pledged to ensure electricity is extended to both schools to facilitate the full utilization of the newly constructed facilities. “We are committed to supporting the connection of electricity to the schools so that the infrastructure can be put to its intended use,” Hiremath said.
Meanwhile, Zombo District Education Officer Patrick Angala revealed that the Ministry of Education and Sports has already supplied laboratory equipment, apparatus, reagents, and computers for the two institutions. “The Ministry has delivered the required laboratory equipment and computers. Installation will commence once the schools are connected to electricity,” Angala said.
The completion of the two schools is expected to improve access to quality secondary education for learners in Kango and Paidha sub-counties, while strengthening science and technology learning through the provision of modern laboratory and computer facilities.
