Police in the Albertine region have cautioned members of the public against reporting land disputes to police stations, emphasizing that such matters fall under civil law and should be handled by courts.

Speaking to journalists at his office, on may 30th, 2026, the Albertine South Regional Police Spokesperson, Julius Allan Hakiza, said police continue to receive a high number of land-related complaints that are outside their mandate.

Hakiza explained that land disputes are primarily civil in nature and are best addressed through the judicial system. He clarified that police only intervene when such disputes escalate into criminal acts, including assault, trespassing, or malicious damage to property.

He urged the public to seek redress through courts of law or consult relevant legal authorities for proper guidance on land matters.

Hakiza further noted that accusations of police inaction in land cases are often misplaced, as the force’s role is limited to handling criminal aspects arising from such disputes.
