Three fishermen have died after a fishing boat carrying six people capsized on the River Nile in Pakwach Sub-county, Pakwach District, in the early hours of Monday, October 12, 2026.
Three fishermen survived the incident, while two bodies have been recovered and one fisherman remains missing.
Alfred Jawok, the LCIII chairperson of Pakwach Sub-county, confirmed the tragic accident and identified the deceased as Amitu Brian, Parmu Muswa and Geofrey Owormungu.
Jawok said the two bodies were retrieved with the joint assistance of the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) and local fishermen. Efforts to locate the missing fisherman remain a key concern following the incident.
The accident occurred during a violent storm on the River Nile, highlighting the dangers fishermen face when weather conditions become severe while they are on the water.
Following the tragedy, Jawok urged local fishermen to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant, warning that venturing into the river during heavy storms is highly dangerous.
He emphasised the need for fishermen to take weather conditions seriously and avoid putting their lives at risk when storms occur.
